Porto Garibaldi
Porto Garibaldi began as a fishing port and the village grew around the port, becoming the first beach resort on this coast. The town is characterised by low-rise buildings which maintain the look of a fishing village along the navigable canal that connects Comacchio to the sea. The fishermen of Portogaribaldi are one big family, returning early in the morning with a mob of hungry seagulls around their boats. These boats, with their female names, spend whole days and nights on the sea in search of the fish which are delivered in a whirlwind of voices and timeless gestures. This precious cargo is best tasted fresh in the numerous restaurants, or at home following the recipes of the locals who have always lived alongside the fishes.
Portogaribaldi faces out to sea, but it is also at the mouth of a long waterway that runs inland as far as Ferrara.
Several traditional events are held on the canal port, including the Festa della Madonna del Mare in June with its traditional procession of decorated boats, and the great Festival of Hospitality in mid-August with free local Bosco Eliceo wine and fresh cooked anchovies, mackerel and sardines, with a grand firework finale.
Ferry
A typical ferry at the end of via Caduti del Mare crosses to the other bank towards Lido degli Estensi. It only transports bicycles and pedestrians.
Step into history
At one time known as the Lido di Magnavacca, Porto Garibaldi took the name of the great Italian hero in 1919, in memory of his landing nearby on August 3rd 1849 when escaping the Austrians. When it was reconstructed after the Second World War, the streets of this established beach resort were named after the most significant people and dates of the Garibaldi era.
By motorboat
From the canal port there are regular departures in large and welcoming boats - with a strong tradition that includes safety - on which you can spend the day with specialised guides on the most imposing river delta in Italy, in search of the most atmospheric corners, in a silence interrupted only by the murmur of nature and the calls of the birds.
Another experience that can be had at any time of the year is to go fishing in the bountiful waters of the Adriatic. It is possible to book trips by day or by night, a different way of experiencing the sea.
