The Salina
Extending for more than 600 hectares at the back of Lido degli Estensi, the Salina (saltworks) preserves works developed in the Napoleonic period, and is a testament to the production of salt carried on since ancient times in Comacchio.
The Salina is formed from canals, sandbars and pools of water: these are of great interest to naturalists and, in the interests of sustainability, the moment that salt production stopped here the works became a nature reserve recognised by the EU. With this in mind, there are environmental restoration projects geared to display and to teach. The simple flatness of the horizon conceals a beautiful and harmonious spectacle, the flight of colonies of water birds, like the splendid pink flamingo, king of the Salina.
The architectural details of this zone are all linked to fishing: the building which today house the the visitor centre is an old casone, used by the fishermen for storage, as an observation point and sometimes temporary accommodation.
The visit leaves from Stazione Foce and proceeds along the Fosse - Foce embankment. It can only be visited with a pre-arranged guide. Information: see Useful Information.
